Information Futures Forum 1 July 2009

The economics of Open Access publishing

In this Information Futures Forum, Professor John Houghton spoke about the latest developments in Open Access publishing.

Professor John Houghton is internationally respected for his research into the economic impact of Open Access publishing. The publication of "Economic Implications of Alternative Scholarly Publishing Models: exploring the costs and benefits" (by Houghton et al and Oppenheime et al) in the UK earlier this year has led to vigorous discussions among academic publishers, researchers, libraries and institutions about ways to improve scholarly communication.

Professor Leon Sterling, Director eResearch at the University of Melbourne and Gavan McCarthy, Director of the eScholarship Research Centre at the University of Melbourne, presented their perspectives on Open Access publishing.

This forum was chaired by Professor Peter Rathjen, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Melbourne.

An audio recording of the forum is available.
